A gold miner in Canada accidentally found a baby mammoth fossil in almost perfect condition. The cub belongs to the species described as a woolly mammoth.

The discovery, which caused great excitement, took place last week Tuesday in the Klondike gold exploration area in the Yukon region.

The mammoth, thought to have been born about 30,000 years ago, was found by a gold miner digging in the permafrost.

The female baby mammoth was named “Nun cho ga”, which means “big baby animal” in the local language spoken in the region.

Members of the Trʼondëk Hwëch community, the indigenous people of the region, also organized a ceremony for the mammoth.

Nun cho ga is said to be the best preserved woolly mammoth specimen found in North America and the first woolly mammoth with an almost complete body.

Dr. Grant Zazula, a paleontologist from the Yukon Territory, shared his excitement, saying the discovery was a dream come true.

“Nun cho ga is one of the most unique Ice Age mummified animals ever discovered in the world. I can’t wait to get to know him more.”

DIED AT 30-35 DAYS OLD

Paleontologist Zazula says the baby mammoth is 35-40 thousand years old.

The local people of the region also attach great importance to Nun cho ga.

Roberta Joseph, indigenous chief of the Trʼondëk Hwëch people, said they will work with Canadian government officials on further research.

She said that the studies will be in line with their culture and traditions.

The CBC channel broadcasting in Canada reported that the baby mammoth was 140 centimeters long and 30-35 days old when it died.
