All things considered, Jupiter seems like a pretty scary place. More than 300 times larger than Earth (and twice as big as all the rest of our solar system’s planets combined), the King of the Planets has twice the strength of our gravity and an extraordinarily dense, dry atmosphere. And you know that Great Red Spot on its surface? Apparently it’s a storm that has been raging for centuries. Really spooky stuff.
But some scientists now think that Jupiter might be even more of a monster than we previously thought. A paper in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics says the planet has become its gigantic, monster self by eating other planets.

The paper suggests that Jupiter has the remains of other planets hidden inside it. While the theory that Jupiter was born from other planets has been around for some time, a clearer picture emerged after the planet’s notorious gases temporarily separated and NASA’s Juno space probe obtained some data about its core.
This data was able to give scientists a better idea of what Jupiter looks like under its massive clouds of gas. Apparently, the chemical makeup of the planet’s core shows that Jupiter swallowed many small planets (called planetesimals) and space rocks to accelerate its own growth.
