In his first message since taking office last week, Sanders referred to the Second World War, The Sun newspaper reported;

“We are the generation that must once again prepare the military to fight in Europe. (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s bloody aggression against Ukraine has shaken the foundations of global security.”

Emphasizing that he was the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff since 1941 to assume command of the military in the shadow of a land war involving a continental power in Europe, Sanders pledged to build an army capable of defeating Russia in battle.

“There is now an imperative to build an army that can fight alongside our allies and defeat Russia in battle,” Sanders added.

“Both moves will strengthen NATO and prevent Russia from further invading Europe,” Sanders wrote in his message, promising to accelerate plans to modernize the military and deploy overseas more frequently to respond more quickly to crises.
