New lawsuit for iPhone battery limitation claim
Justin Gutmann, an advocate, believes that Apple is deceiving its customers about battery restrictions. Gutmann, who says that older iPhones are not achieving their true performance, has appealed to the UK’s Competition Appeal Tribunal on behalf of 25 million users.
The claim by the consumer rights advocate centers on a software update sent to iPhone users in January 2017. The lawsuit report refers to the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X models.
Gutmann alleged that a battery management tool was hidden in iOS updates to combat iPhone performance issues and prevent older devices from suddenly shutting down. He accused the company of slowing down iPhone performance and demanded compensation.
If the case goes to trial, Apple will pay nearly $1 billion in damages to more than 25 million iPhone users. However, Apple has previously stated that it has “never” intentionally reduced the lifespan of its devices.
This is not the first lawsuit against Apple’s attempt to slow down older iPhones. Apple was previously ordered to pay up to $500 million to owners of older devices as part of an investigation launched in the US in 2020.
