People’s Party (BJP) spokesman Nupur Sharma was suspended by his party after he made insulting remarks against Islam and the Prophet Muhammad on his television program on June 3.

Along with Sharma, Kumar was also expelled from the party for “insulting religious values” on social media.

Following the decision, BJP General Secretary Arun Singh issued a statement stating that “his party does not approve of any insult to religion and respects all faiths.”

Without mentioning the names and statements of the individuals in question, the statement said, “The BJP is against ideologies that insult and humiliate any religion or sect. The BJP does not support such people or philosophy.”

“The BJP condemns the insult of any religion to another religion or religious figure,” the statement said.

Sharma apologized over the backlash.

Sharma tweeted over the backlash, “I didn’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings. If I offend people with my words, I will take back my words.”

Kumar, who was expelled from the party, stressed the importance of the party’s decision for him, saying he was a person who devoted himself to the party.
