The Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights (UST) and the France-based Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) reported that executions in Iran increased by 25 percent in 2021, urging the international community to make it a priority in any negotiations with Tehran.
The report, shared today by the two NGOs, highlighted that execution rates in Iran have also increased since former Judicial Chief Ibrahim Reisi was elected president in June.

According to the report, which is based on official media and also sources in Iran, 267 people were executed in 2020, an increase of 25 percent to 333 in 2021.

According to the two NGOs, the number of drug trafficking-related executions has also increased by 25 percent, and 126 people have been executed in 2021.
“Iran is launching a strong return to the international arena through negotiations on its nuclear program. But at the same time, he continued to carry out executions, using the death penalty as a tool to suppress many dissidents” statements.
Mahmoud Amiri Moghaddam, president of iran’s Human Rights Organization, said tehran’s appalling performance in human rights and the death penalty were not included in negotiations over its 2015 nuclear deal aimed at preventing Iran from owning an atomic bomb.
Moghaddam added that Iranian authorities are subject to less oversight when conducting these negotiations.
