A new study has found that the world’s segments suitable for growing coffee, cashews and avocados will change significantly due to climate change.
Researchers examined how rising temperatures and changing rainfall rates will affect coffee, cashew and avocado cultivation over the next 30 years, the BBC reported.
Key regions where coffee grows in Brazil, Indonesia, Vietnam and Colombia will decrease by about 50 percent by 2050, the study noted.
In the lowest temperature scenario, there would be a 76 percent reduction in the most favorable regions of Brazil for coffee, the study said, while in Colombia it could be 63 percent. Meanwhile, some regions in Argentina, South Africa, China and New Zealand will become more suitable for coffee cultivation, the study said.
Due to climate change, suitable areas for cashew cultivation could increase by 17 percent, the study said.
In Mexico, the world’s largest producer of avocados, eligible areas will increase by more than 80 percent, the study said, while in Peru, another major grower, about half of eligible areas could be lost under the same climate model.
