For the first time in Pakistan, a female judge has been appointed to pakistan’s Supreme Court.
Judge Ayse Malik was sworn in at a ceremony in the capital Islamabad and began her duties at the Supreme Court, Pakistani media reported.
Malik became the first and only female judge of Pakistan’s Supreme Court, where 16 male judges were employed.
“I congratulate Judge Ayse Malik on becoming the first female judge of the Supreme Court,” Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said in a post on her social media account.
Malik, 55, a graduate of Harvard University, had served on the Lahore Supreme Court for 20 years.
The commission on judicial appointments voted 4-5 on January 7th to appoint Malik to the Supreme Court.
