China intensified its military activities near Taiwan. To pressure Taiwan to accept Chinese rule, Chinese warplanes repeatedly entered the island’s airspace.
Mark Ebishop, who works as a National Security Correspondent for the US-based National Interest magazine, touched upon the possible invasion of Taiwan by China on a report published by the Taiwan Ministry of Defense.
The report said that the People’s Liberation Army of China could prepare to invade the island through joint military exercises involving its troops, the Chinese navy and the Chinese air force.
“The People’s Liberation Army will then send various warships to the Western Pacific to repel foreign forces coming to support Taiwan and also to impose a strategic blockade that will prevent these forces from coming to their aid. After that, the People’s Liberation Army of China will launch an all-out offensive that includes precision missile strikes targeting critical communications infrastructure and electronic countermeasures with the aim of disrupting key military facilities in Taiwan. After Taiwan fails to offer effective resistance, the Chinese military will launch an amphibious landing operation. “Beijing’s goal at this point will be to invade Taiwan as quickly as possible to reduce the possibility of foreign interference.”
Episkobos said Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense has urged lawmakers in Taiwan to support the government’s program to increase military spending by about $8.69 billion over the next five years.
The report is based on Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense’s assessment that Beijing plans to attack Taiwan by 2025, according to the South China Morning Post. But Taipei says carrying out a full-scale invasion would be technically difficult and would put Beijing at obvious disadvantages.
In the report of the ministry, “The National Army is fiercely defending the ports and airports and it will not be easy to occupy in a short time. As the occupation forces of the People’s Liberation Army are stranded in the Taiwan Strait, they will face significant logistical constraints. Also, US and Japanese military bases are close to Taiwan, and any Chinese attack will be watched closely. “The fact that the army will need reservists to prevent any foreign military intervention is also evident.”
Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe warned at a recent Taiwan-US-Japanese security conference that a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be disastrous for Beijing.
“Any military adventure of a gigantic economy like the Chinese economy would be suicidal to say the least. We must urge China not to pursue geographic expansion, but to refrain from provoking and bullying its neighbors, because it will harm China’s interests,” Abe said.
