Schengen approval from EU to Croatia
Member states of the European Union have approved Croatia’s accession to the Schengen area.
With the decision taken at the EU Interior Ministers Meeting, it was stated that the EU countries agreed that Croatia fulfilled the necessary conditions to implement the entire Schengen acquis.
EU Commissioner for internal affairs Ylva Johansson also said that Croatia is ready to join the Schengen area.
It will be possible for Croatia to join the Schengen area and abolish border controls with other Schengen countries after the approval of the European Council.
Croatia, which also wants to switch to the euro as its currency, became a member of the EU in 2013. The EU Commission also announced in 2019 that Croatia met the necessary conditions to join the Schengen area.
The Schengen area consists of 26 European countries. Citizens of more than 60 countries can travel to Schengen countries without a visa. Visas are required from citizens of more than 100 countries.
