Mullah Hamidullah Nisar, Director of Culture and Information in Ghazni, told the Taliban-led news agency Bahktar that an unexploded mine dating back to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan exploded yesterday in the village of Zedran in Giro district.

Noting that the explosion took place when the children found the unexploded mine and were playing, Nisar reported that 9 children, including 5 girls, lost their lives as a result of the incident.

The Soviet Union, which occupied Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989, and the Afghan government it supported at the time, planted mines in rural areas under the pretext of fighting insurgents.

These mines have killed and maimed many children.
