Christopher Nolan secured his first Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award for the historical epic “Oppenheimer” at Saturday night’s ceremony. Additionally, Celine Song, director of “Past Lives,” received the Michael Apted Award for her debut feature, while Mstyslav Chernov won for his documentary “20 Days in Mariupol,” which is also nominated for an Oscar.
In the television categories, Peter Hoar won for directing “The Last of Us,” Christopher Storer for “The Bear,” and Sarah Adina Smith for “Lessons in Chemistry.”
DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter acknowledged the challenges the industry faced during last year’s strikes but expressed gratitude for returning to work with improved protections for DGA members. Glatter also emphasized support for upcoming negotiations between IATSE and the AMPTP.
Host Judd Apatow humorously referenced the strikes and praised Fran Drescher’s role as a voice of reason. The evening also saw directors honored with medallions, including Greta Gerwig and Martin Scorsese.
Notable speeches included Gerwig’s tearful acceptance and Yorgos Lanthimos’ tribute to Scorsese. Former DGA president Taylor Hackford and actor Cillian Murphy honored Alexander Payne and Christopher Nolan, respectively, with heartfelt speeches.
The ceremony also recognized David Nutter with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Television, Janet G. Knutsen with the Frank Capra Achievement Award, and Gary Natoli with the Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award.
