Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) have gained significant popularity in recent years, progressively replacing traditional automatic transmissions in numerous small and mid-size vehicles. This shift is primarily attributed to the enhanced fuel efficiency and smooth driving experience offered by CVTs, which operate without fixed gear ratios, eliminating the jerking sensations associated with acceleration or deceleration in conventional transmissions.
CVTs are notably prevalent in vehicles from Nissan, Subaru, and Mitsubishi. However, despite the efficiency and reliability reputation they have cultivated, especially in Nissan models, CVTs, and particularly Nissan’s, have faced pervasive issues. The manufacturer has been the subject of numerous lawsuits related to transmission problems.
In response to these challenges, Nissan has extended warranties for specific CVT-equipped vehicles, issued service bulletins, updated CVT designs, and provided settlements and buybacks for affected customers. Despite these efforts, Nissan’s CVTs continue to be perceived as unreliable, plagued by issues such as overheating, shuddering, and unusual noises.
Overheating problems
A primary concern with Nissan CVTs is overheating, a common problem for continuously variable transmissions due to the heat they generate. The stock cooling system installed by Nissan is often inadequate in effectively dissipating heat, leading to the gradual degradation of components and potential failure of the entire CVT system. Overheating can produce a distinctive burning smell, and if left unaddressed, it may lead to immediate issues, such as the vehicle entering limp mode, resulting in reduced functionality and speed.
In response to widespread overheating, Nissan offered an external cooler upgrade to affected customers under warranty, but this solution doesn’t always prove effective, often necessitating the replacement of the entire transmission.
Another prevalent issue with Nissan CVTs is shuddering, characterized by shakes and vibrations felt inside the vehicle. This problem is often attributed to a worn-out belt or faulty pulleys within the CVT. Nissan’s use of steel for the CVT belt makes it susceptible to stretching and damage over time, exacerbated by powerful engines in larger vehicles like the Nissan Pathfinder.
Nissan attempted to address shuddering issues with a transmission control module (TCM) software update, but this only aids in quicker diagnosis and doesn’t resolve the fundamental problems with the CVTs.
Due to the known frequency of Nissan CVT failures, potential buyers may approach Nissan vehicles with caution. While the manufacturer has taken steps to address issues, existing owners can prolong their CVT’s life by adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule outlined in the owner’s manual. Regular maintenance, including oil changes, coolant flushes, and transmission fluid services, can contribute to warranty fulfillment and mitigate the risk of CVT failure.
In addition to maintenance, conservative driving practices and avoiding heavy towing can further protect the CVT. Despite these precautions, owners should remain vigilant for symptoms of CVT issues to avoid costly repairs.
