Where and when was the world's first clock invented?

A clock is an instrument for measuring time. It allows to measure the difference between two different times within the measurements created by humans. The angles between the numbers of the clock are 30 degrees.

Clocks were first used in Egypt around 4000 BC. The Egyptians had discovered that the sun rose and set in a certain pattern every day. Taking advantage of this, they succeeded in inventing the sundial. In this type of clock, the time was calculated by looking at the length of the shadow cast by an upright object according to the angle of incidence of the Sun. However, the sundial had a shortcoming. It could not work at night because there was no sun. So the ancient Egyptians invented the hourglass and the water clock.

where the first wind-up clocks were made

  • 1524 was the first time winding clocks were made. The German lockmaker Peter Henlien produced the first known winding clock in history.

  • By the 1550s, the number of mechanical clocks in the world had increased dramatically and winding clocks were replaced by mechanical clocks. Most of the watches produced were of German and French manufacture. In 1575, Swedish and English manufacturers emerged. However, at that time, watches were seen as an accessory. In other words, watches were a fashion venture rather than a development of the watch sense.
  • The changes after 1600 essentially did not change this view of fashion and accessories. Watches were now seen purely as an accessory and were valued as jewelry.
  • In 1656 the first pendulum clock was developed by Christiaan Huygens.
  • In 1704, a manufacturer named Dullier experimented with replacing some of the brass parts with jewels.
  • In 1721, George Graham’s pendulum clock was revolutionized by its punctuality. This pendulum clock was only 1 second behind per day.
  • In 1761, John Harrison’s nautical chronometer to be used on ships, which he built as a solution to the problem of [Longitude_(book) longitude], was the clock with the lowest error rate among the clocks made until that time. It was only off by 0.02 seconds a day, and John Harrison, the maker of this clock, was awarded a cash prize. The prize, promised by the British parliament through a law passed in response to a naval disaster, was worth 10 million dollars.
  • In 1800, a pocket chronometer was made for the first time, meaning the second entered the pocket for the first time.
  • In 1850, a large-scale watch factory is opened in America for the first time and mass production begins for the first time.
  • In 1952, battery-powered watches began to be produced for the first time, these watches were powered by batteries and achieved a robustness and punctuality that no wind-up watch had ever achieved.
  • In 1970, the first electronic watches in history appeared on the market.
  • In the decades after 1980, smartwatches with increasingly sophisticated software and communication technologies were introduced.
