U.S. city wants U.N. assistance over migrant flood: problem goes beyond El Paso and U.S

3 mins read

The Texas city of El Paso is currently experiencing an acute migration crisis. Due to the high number of people crossing the Mexican border, the city government has declared a state of emergency. The mayor is now also pushing for cooperation with the UN.

In recent days, an unprecedented number of migrants have crossed the southern border of the United States near the city of El Paso in the US state of Texas. Local authorities were forced to declare a seven-day state of emergency over the weekend. With this measure, the city government wanted to give itself the opportunity to convert certain facilities into emergency shelters and ask the state for additional funds to care for migrants.

On Wednesday, Mayor Oscar Leeser reiterated the seriousness of the situation in an interview for CNN. The Democratic politician considered a call for help to the United Nations. Everyone should participate in solving this migration crisis.

“This is not an El Paso problem. It goes beyond El Paso. Frankly, I think it goes beyond the United States. We need to work with the U.N. and with other countries to come up with a humanitarian program for everyone.”

That commitment also needs to be bipartisan, Leeser stressed. City authorities, meanwhile, are working with the U.S. government, the Red Cross and other organizations to address the situation. But it is a “band-aid” effort to fix the problem in the very short term, he said. The current immigration process is not working, he said, and it needs to be fixed.

Wednesday also should have seen the so-called Title 42 rule expire. The legal standard had been introduced under former Republican President Donald Trump and had allowed authorities to quickly turn back migrants, citing the Corona pandemic. In this context, local authorities assumed that illegal migration could increase by leaps and bounds.

For the time being, however, the Supreme Court blocked the planned repeal of the rule. The U.S. government was asked to rule on an emergency petition filed by several states seeking to uphold the deportation rule. The U.S. government asked the Supreme Court not to block the repeal of the Title 42 rule. However, unlike the original plan, the measure should not go away until after Christmas, according to a government request to the court.

Earlier this week, the Texas National Guard sent its troops to El Paso and set up barbed-wire fences at the border to prevent illegal crossings from Mexico. According to the city, about 250 migrants a day had arrived in El Paso in August. That number increased to about 1,000 arrivals per day in September, according to the report. Most recently, city authorities estimated up to 2,500 arrivals per day.
