State media said on Thursday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned that he was prepared to use his nuclear weapons in prospective military engagements with the United States and South Korea. Kim stated in a furious speech that his adversaries are bringing the Korean Peninsula to the verge of catastrophe.

On the 69th anniversary of the conclusion of the 1950–1953 Korean War, Kim addressed military veterans in an apparent effort to strengthen internal cohesion in the economically struggling nation. Even while Kim has been threatening his adversaries with nuclear weapons more often, many think it’s improbable that he would use them first against the stronger forces of the US and its allies.

According to the official Korean Central News Agency, Kim stated in his speech on Wednesday that “our armed forces are fully prepared to respond to any crisis, and our country’s nuclear war deterrent is also ready to mobilize its absolute power dutifully, precisely, and quickly in accordance with its mission.”

He claimed that the US was “demonizing” North Korea to further its hostile foreign policy. He claimed that joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea against North Korea demonstrate the country’s “double standards” and “gangster-like” characteristics by characterizing the latter’s regular military actions—a clear allusion to its missile tests—as provocations or threats.

Additionally, Yoon Suk Yeol’s new South Korean administration, according to Kim, is run by “gangsters” and “confrontation maniacs” who have gone beyond past conservative South Korean regimes. The Yoon administration has worked to fortify Seoul’s military relationship with the United States since taking office in May. It has also improved Seoul’s capabilities to counter North Korean nuclear threats, such as a preemptive strike capability.

It is absurd and extremely dangerous to discuss military action against our country, which has the weapons that they dread the most. Our formidable might will swiftly punish such a risky endeavor, and the Yoon Suk Yeol administration and his military would be completely destroyed, Kim said.

A deputy spokeswoman for the South Korean Defense Ministry, Moon Hong-sik, confirmed an earlier statement on Thursday that South Korea had been building up its military might and adopting a joint defense posture with the United States to deal with the growing nuclear threats from North Korea. The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea stated that the armed forces are fully prepared.

Kim stated in April that North Korea may deploy nuclear weapons as a first line of defense if threatened and that they would “never be constrained to the exclusive task of war deterrence.”

Additionally, Kim’s military has conducted test launches of nuclear-armed missiles that are capable of hitting both South Korea and the US mainland.

North Korea is prepared to perform its first nuclear test in five years, according to repeated statements made by US and South Korean officials over the past several months.

As a result of his own poor management, US-led sanctions, border closures connected to the epidemic, and other factors, Kim is attempting to win over a larger portion of the populace.

Although the number of illnesses and fatalities from North Korea’s first Covid-19 epidemic were acknowledged in May, the severity of the disease is still debatable in a nation without access to modern medical resources.

Professor Leif-Eric Easley of Seoul’s Ewha University claimed that Kim’s rhetoric “inflates foreign dangers to legitimize his military oriented and economically suffering dictatorship.”

Although North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs are illegal under international law, Kim attempts to pass off his unstable armaments buildup as a noble act of self-defense.

As the allies get ready to extend their summertime drills, experts predict that North Korea will escalate its threats against the United States and South Korea. Due to Covid-19 worries and to assist the now-stalled US-led dialogue aimed at persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear program in exchange for economic and political benefits, the South Korean and US forces have recently halted or scaled back some of their usual drills.

In his speech on Wednesday, Kim also implied that he plans to carry out the anticipated nuclear test by stating that his government has lately been given responsibilities to increase its military capabilities more quickly in order to counter military pressure campaigns by its foes.

The private Sejong Institute in South Korea’s Cheong Seong-Chang, however, asserted that North Korea was unlikely to carry out its nuclear test before to China’s (its principal ally and largest source of aid), Communist Party conference in the autumn. According to him, China is concerned that a nuclear test by North Korea may give the US cause to strengthen security ties with its allies, which it might then use to restrain Chinese influence in the area.

Experts believe it’s uncertain if North Korea can ease its severe limitations soon since it might have a viral rebound later this year. The nation recently claimed it was making progress against the Covid-19 epidemic despite declining fever cases. Photos from state media at the event on Wednesday showed that Kim, veterans, and others did not wear masks. In comparison to the high of almost 400,000 instances per day in May, North Korea reported only 11 cases of fever on Thursday.

American and South Korean proposals for medical aid supplies have been rebuffed by North Korea. It has also stated that it will not resume negotiations with the US unless the latter ends its hostile policies toward the North, an apparent allusion to US-led sanctions and joint military exercises with South Korea.
