On August 4, 1962, actress Marilyn Monroe died at the age of only 36. The American was found lifeless in her home in Los Angeles. The exact circumstances of her death have not been clarified to this day. A few weeks before her death, in June 1962, Monroe was still in front of the camera for a photo shoot for the American “Vogue”. The pictures were taken by US photographer Bert Stern in Bungalow 264 of the Bel-Air Hotel in Los Angeles. The collaboration between Monroe and Stern went down in history as “The Last Sitting.” The pictures can be seen in a coffee-table book that was reissued by the Taschen publishing house to mark the anniversary of Monroe’s death.

August 4 marks the 60th anniversary of the death of actress Marilyn Monroe. In 1962, the film star died at the age of 36 under circumstances that are still not entirely clear. A few weeks earlier, Monroe had completed a major photo shoot for the fashion magazine “Vogue”, which became known as “The Last Sitting”.

US photographer Bert Stern photographed the actress two weekends in a row in a bungalow of the Bel-Air Hotel in Los Angeles. More than 2500 pictures were taken, some of which were published in the September issue of “Vogue” after Monroe’s death.

The pictures can be seen in an illustrated book, which was reissued by the Taschen publishing house on the occasion of the anniversary of Monroe’s death. The photo book is complemented by a text by U.S. writer Norman Mailer, Pulitzer Prize winner and one of the most important authors of the 20th century. Mailer published his 1973 work “Marilyn Monroe. A Biography.” The original text is now reprinted in the illustrated book.

Although Mailer never met Monroe in person, he watched almost all of her films and spoke with numerous people who were close to her, creating a portrait of a woman who continues to fascinate to this day.
