WhatsApp is discontinuing support for iOS 10 and 11
WABetaInfo has announced that as of October 24, 2022, the WhatsApp application will stop supporting iOS 10 and iOS 11 operating systems. The company, which has already notified users running one of these two versions, announced its decision as follows:
WhatsApp will stop supporting this iOS version starting October 24, 2022. Please update your phone to the latest version of iOS by going to Settings > General and tapping Software Update.
WhatsApp also hasn’t forgotten to update the “Supported operating systems” page in its Help Center. Added the item “iPhone with iOS 12 or later” to the recommended devices section. On this page, it was previously stated that the application supports devices with iOS 10 and above.
What devices does it affect?
WhatsApp will not work on iPhone 5 and iPhone 5C models that do not support the iOS 12 operating system. On iPhones that are compatible with iOS 12 and later, including the iPhone 5S, it will continue to work smoothly.
Last year, WhatsApp also ended support for Android 4.0.3 and iOS 9. After this decision, it only continued to work on phones compatible with iOS 10 and above.
With the development of technology, many new features are added to WhatsApp and these may require up-to-date operating systems to work smoothly. In this context, the company may have to end its support for older versions compulsorily. Twitter has also ended application support on the iPhone 6 in recent months.
How does WhatsApp determine the versions it will support?
WhatsApp explains which operating system it will support and stop supporting:
“To determine which operating systems to stop supporting, we identify the oldest and least number of devices and software used each year, as do other technology companies. These devices may also lack the latest security updates or the functionality needed to run WhatsApp.”
