Hardwicke said he should have warned Pattinson after the audition that Stewart was a minor.
Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has revealed she is concerned that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s first kiss is “illegal.”
On a new episode of The Big Hit Show podcast, which aired Wednesday (January 19), Hardwicke told host Alex Pappademas that he auditioned for Pattinson’s vampire movie series after it was confirmed stewart would play Bella Swan.
Spencer was 17 at the time and Pattinson was 21.
Hardwicke recalled that when he first auditioned in 2007, Pattinson didn’t look like part of Edward Cullen, the perfect, glittering vampire bella had emotional attention for.
“He came in, had his hair dyed black for a play, and he had weird perch. He wasn’t in great shape,” the director said. Okay, let’s see how it goes,”” he added.
But when the pair played Swan and Cullen’s first kiss at Hardwicke’s Los Angeles home, their chemistry was palpable.
Girl and Wolf (Red Riding Hood) director Hardwicke continued:
Rob and Kristen auditioned in my bed, they were re-enacting the kissing scene, and Rob got so carried away that he fell out of bed. And I said, “Dude, calm down.” And I was there, shooting with my little video camera or something.
After the audition, Stewart told Hardwicke that Cullen should be played by The Batman actor, now 34.
“I can tell you there was a strong chemistry between them and I said, ‘Oh my God,'” he told Pappademas. I think Kristen was 17. I don’t want to do anything illegal,” Hardwicke later warned Pattinson, warning that Stewart was a minor.
The director continued:
‘By the way, Kristen’s 17,’ she told Rob. It’s illegal to have sex with a minor in our country.’ And Rob said, “Oh, okay, whatever.”
Stewart and Pattinson began dating in 2009, but briefly split in 2012 when it was revealed that Stewart was having an affair with Rupert Sanders, the director of Snow White and the Huntsman. They ended their relationship completely in 2013. Pattinson confirmed in a 2019 interview that they were on good distance.
