More than 3,000 law enforcement agencies connected to Europol's intelligence network

In today’s statement, Europol emphasised that in 2023 alone, 1.79 million intelligence messages were exchanged and 151,000 investigations were opened through SIENA, through a ‘secure information exchange network application’ called SIENA. “The platform enables the rapid exchange of operational and strategic information between Europol, EU Member States and partner countries with which Europol has concluded co-operation agreements or working arrangements. This service can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

The messages at SIENA noted that drug trafficking, fraud and illegal migration were the most frequently queried areas of offences. “In an increasingly globalised world, access to real-time information from every corner of the EU and beyond allows law enforcement agencies to have a more comprehensive picture of criminal activity, enabling them to protect their communities more effectively,” said Andrei Linta, Europol’s Deputy Executive Director for Capability.
