In the US, the Chicago Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) shared police body camera footage of the March 21 fatal shooting in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
According to the video, four police officers surrounded a white SUV-type vehicle and shouted at Reed, 26, to “open the door,” followed by dozens of gunshots.
Although COPA’s preliminary report stated that Reed was the first to fire his weapon and that the police responded later, this was not clear from publicly available footage.
Reed, who was taken to the hospital, lost his life, while a police officer was wounded in the wrist.

COPA, the organization authorized to investigate police shootings, has asked that the police officers who fired 96 bullets at the suspected black teenager in 41 seconds be suspended from duty until the investigation is completed.
US Senator Dick Durbin said on social media platform X that the violence in the video showing the shooting of Dexter Reed was “shocking”.
“Our law enforcement officers serve society with honor and courage and face many risks. But those who fail to follow the high standards they have sworn to uphold must be held accountable. I am hopeful that a thorough investigation will be conducted in a fair and timely manner.”
