Solar eclipse warning from scientists: "Observe animals"

Scientists say some animals may exhibit strange behavior due to next month’s total solar eclipse.

For this, the researchers examined zoos and asked the public to take note of their pets’ behavior.

During the last solar eclipse in the US in 2017, flamingos surrounded their young to protect them, giraffes ran around in their cages, and flocks of birds stopped flying and landed in trees.

“Animals don’t know what to do during an eclipse because celestial events are not something their bodies can adapt to,” said Andrew Farnsworth, a scientist at the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology.

Farnsworth said, “Eclipses are not frequent, but they are not rare either. We humans can plan for eclipses. But it would be unexpected for animals with short lifespans to observe them.”

Allison O’Neill, who observed the behavior of goats nearby during the 2017 eclipse, told the NY Post that the goats suddenly became quiet and went into a resting position.

O’Neill said, “The behavior of the goats was very remarkable. We stopped watching the eclipse and turned our attention to them because they were very deliberate and sudden. As soon as the eclipse was over, they started making noise again.”

Adam Hartson-Rose from North Carolina State University described his observation at Riverbanks Zoo during the 2017 eclipse.

Hartson-Rose said:

I thought it was nonsense and that the animals would not be affected in any way. But when the zoo went dark, the behavior of all the animals changed, except the bears. The bears looked completely bewildered.

Hartstone-Rose added that all zoos across the US should be surveyed in this eclipse.

The April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible from parts of Mexico, the US and Canada.
