Houthis say Israel targeted sensitive areas and a ship in Eilat

Yemen’s Houthis said they targeted sensitive areas in the southern Israeli city of Eilat and an Israeli ship in the Gulf of Aden.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Seri said in a statement, “The Yemeni Navy (affiliated to the Houthis) carried out a series of drone operations against the sensitive areas of the Israeli enemy in the city of Umm er-Rashrash (Eilat), south of occupied Palestine (Israel).”

“The Yemeni Navy targeted the Israeli ship MSC SILVER in the Gulf of Aden with appropriate naval missiles,” Seri said.

Seri pointed out that the Houthis also carried out drone attacks on US warships in the Red Sea and the Sea of Oman, stressing that these operations were carried out in support of the Palestinian people and in response to the US and UK attacks on Yemen.

It was noteworthy that these attacks came after the European Union (EU) announced the launch of a military mission to contribute to the security of navigation in the Red Sea.

Yesterday, the EU announced the launch of the “Aspides” military mission to contribute to the security of navigation in the Red Sea.

Stating that the mission will contribute to restoring freedom of navigation and protecting commercial shipping, the EU noted that the “Aspides” mission will be for defense purposes only.

According to the EU, the mission will provide “situational awareness” at sea, escort ships and respond to possible attacks, and will be active in international waters in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf, as well as the main sea lines of communication in the Strait of Babu’l-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz.

Situation in the Red Sea

On October 31, 2023, the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen began seizing commercial ships off the coast of Yemen, some of which they said were linked to Israeli companies, and attacking some of them with drones and missiles in response to Israel’s attacks in Gaza.

US forces announced that they had shot down missiles and kamikaze drones launched from Yemen several times during this period.

Following the Houthi actions, many shipping companies decided to suspend their voyages in the Red Sea.

On December 18, 2023, the United States announced the formation of a multinational “maritime task force” called “Operation Welfare Guardian” against Houthi forces with the participation of a group of countries on the grounds that the security of global maritime trade was endangered.

In the Red Sea on December 31, 2023, 3 speedboats belonging to the Houthis, who tried to seize a ship linked to Israel, were fired upon by US helicopters.

On January 10, the Houthis announced that a US ship was targeted with missiles and kamikaze drones in the Red Sea on the grounds of supporting Israel.

On January 11, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution submitted by the United States and Japan calling for an immediate end to Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

About 12 percent of global trade is conducted through the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and offers the shortest route between Europe and Asia.
