Kyoko Yamaguchi and her student Faith Erin Cain from Liverpool John Moores University conducted a simple 30-second vision test on 39 adult volunteer subjects. This vision test was conducted in low light conditions.

After the subjects self-reported their eye color, these colors were verified according to a recently developed classification guide. It was found that 25 of the subjects had blue and shades of blue and 14 had brown and shades of brown eye color.

The ratio of proteins in the iris determines how dark an eye is. Of course, there are also advantages to having brown eyes due to evolutionary changes: People with dark eyes are much less likely to develop cancer and macular degeneration (also known as yellow spot disease) than those with blue eyes.

While it seems plausible that blue-eyedness has disappeared in the evolutionary process, there seem to be several possible explanations for the trait’s persistence in populations.

The perception that those with blue eyes are “more prestigious” or “more beautiful” may have created selectivity in reproduction. According to some studies, those with blue eyes are even thought to be “less depressed” in winter.
