In Israel, which has been shaken by the controversial judicial reform in recent months, a striking confession came from a senior official. The police official revealed that the police lost control over the demonstrations after Netanyahu dismissed anti-reform minister Yoav Gallant.

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets across the country after Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu dismissed Defense Minister Gallant, who had called for a halt to a judicial overhaul that sparked a political crisis and heated protests.

‘WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE SITUATION’

“We have lost control of the protests,” an unnamed senior police official said, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz. Another security official said, “What is happening outside right now is madness. Anyone who thinks that spraying water on the protesters again will calm things down is wrong. We will not be able to control this situation.”

Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper also reported on the crisis-inducing protests, saying, “Police have completely lost control of the massive demonstrations in Ayalon, Tel Aviv’s main artery, following the dismissal of the Defense Minister.” The newspaper reported that the police in the area did not even prevent the protesters who flocked there from entering the area.

THE LAST STRAW

While the judicial reform that restricts the powers of the judiciary by the far-right coalition government led by Netanyahu has caused protests across the country for 12 weeks, the dismissal of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant last night, who called for the regulation to be stopped, was the last straw.

Following Gallant’s dismissal, hundreds of thousands of Israelis took to the streets to protest the judicial reform and Gallant’s dismissal, while calling on Netanyahu to “resign”.
