In an article published on a religious website, former Metropolitan Amvrosios associated the accident in which 57 people lost their lives with the sins committed during the carnival and said, “What is this tragedy in Tempe if not an expression of the wrath of our Lord against the devil’s carnival celebration?”
The statement received a wide reaction in the Greek public opinion.
It was stated that 57 people were killed in the accident in Tempi, north of Larisa in Greece, when a passenger train and a freight train collided, some wagons derailed and the front wagons burned.
The Greek government declared a 3-day national mourning after the deadliest train accident in the country’s history.
