US Vice President Kamala Harris told Chinese President Xi Jinping that Washington does not seek conflict with Beijing, but welcomes competition

Harris had a brief meeting with Cinping at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Thailand.

“We welcome rivalry, but we don’t want conflict and we are not seeking conflict,” Harris told a news conference at the US ambassador’s residence in Bangkok at the end of her Asia trip, Reuters reported.

He added that he reaffirmed US President Joe Biden’s message that “we plan to keep the lines of communication open because it is in the interest of both countries and the world.”

Biden met with Cinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia last week, their first face-to-face meeting since he took office in early 2021.
