Barcelona Court imposes first jail sentence for fake Twitter post
For the first time in Spain, a user was sentenced to imprisonment for posting fake content on social media.
The Barcelona Court sentenced the user, who posted on Twitter in 2019, to 15 months in prison, a fine of 1620 euros and a 5-year ban from teaching and sports activities for using fake content.
The user, who posted a video linking underage migrants living in Spain without parents to acts of violence, reported that the footage in the video targeting migrants was actually an incident in China.
The defendant J.M., who was sentenced for hate crimes and whose Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts were closed, will not go to prison due to his clean criminal record, but he will be required to attend a course on equality.
The case was the first of its kind in Spain as it was a prison sentence for posting false content on social media.
