During a comedy set on Friday at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Chris Rock made fun of the fact that he was “smacked by Suge Smith.”
According to People, Rock remarked, “Everybody is trying to be a fucking victim.” “If everyone declares himself to be a victim, the actual victims won’t be heard. Even Suge Smith punching me in the face… My kids and I went to work the next day.”
Anyone who claims that words harm them has never received a blow to the face, continued Rock.
Just a few hours prior to the stand-up performance, Will Smith had apologized via video for hitting Chris Rock onstage at the Oscars in March. Rock avoided commenting on the apology.
According to The New York Times, the joke appeared to link Smith to Marion “Suge” Knight, who is presently serving a 28-year jail term after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter.
According to the NYT, Knight was first charged with murder, attempted murder, and hit-and-run following an altercation on the “Straight Outta Compton” set in 2015. Terry Carter and Cle “Bone” Sloan were allegedly involved in an argument with Knight, which resulted in Knight running the two men over with his vehicle and killing Carter.
The Sun reported in 2018 that the former rap entrepreneur has a history of violence while serving as CEO of Death Row Records. For instance, he was charged of hanging Vanilla Ice by his feet from a hotel balcony, which Ice refuted in a 2017 interview on “The Dan Patrick Show.”

Smith went on to apologize to his family and to his fellow Oscar nominees from that night, especially Questlove, who accepted the Oscar for best documentary feature for his movie “Summer of Soul” right after the slap.
“Disappointing people is my central trauma. I hate when I let people down,” he said.
“It hurts me psychologically and emotionally to know I didn’t live up to people’s image and impression of me,” he added. “I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself.”
