Corona: 3.9 million Moderna doses to be destroyed

In Germany, almost four million Corona vaccine doses of the US pharmaceutical company Moderna have to be destroyed. The vaccine doses are said to have exceeded the expiration dates.

More Corona vaccine will have to be destroyed in Germany than previously feared due to expiration dates being exceeded. Between December 2021 and the end of June 2022, a total of 3.9 million doses expired “at different stages of the logistical supply chain,” according to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND), a response from the German Federal Ministry of Health to a parliamentary question from MP Stephan Pilsinger (CSU).

According to the information, only vaccine from the U.S. pharmaceutical company Moderna was affected. In April, according to RND, the Ministry of Health had still assumed that three million doses would be threatened with destruction by the end of June.

In his response to the parliamentary question, State Health Secretary Edgar Franke (SPD) indicated that the number of expired doses could be even higher: The data on expiry would be available to the government only insofar as these were reported by doctors or pharmacies to pharmaceutical wholesalers.

Pilsinger, a CSU member of parliament, said he was “shocked” that once again more vaccine than expected ended up in the trash. “Especially in times of tight coffers and inflation, the state must not throw the citizens’ tax money senselessly out the window,” he told the RND
