Due to strict Corona policy: China’s economy grows by only 0.4 percent

How much has the Chinese economy grown during the pandemic?

Compared to the same period last year, the Chinese economy is growing only very slightly – it is the weakest quarterly growth since the start of the Corona pandemic.

Against the backdrop of strict Corona measures, Chinese economic growth slumped significantly in the second quarter. Compared with the same period last year, the second-largest economy grew by only 0.4 percent, according to the Beijing statistics bureau.

It is the weakest quarterly growth since the start of the Corona pandemic. In the first quarter, the economy had still grown by 4.8 percent. For the first half of the year, this resulted in an overall growth of 2.5 percent.

The economy is suffering from Beijing’s unwillingness to back down from its strict “zero corona” policy. The aim of this policy is to nip any outbreak in the bud. Numerous cities in China with over a million inhabitants had imposed tough corona measures, especially in the spring, to prevent the spread of the highly contagious omicron variant.
