No surprises at the G-7 summit

The G-7 countries, known as the Group-7, are currently holding their 2022 summit at the Elmau Palace in Bavaria, Germany. Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Japan, Canada, Japan, Canada and the United States are meeting as the G-7 and are trying to determine a roadmap for the economic and political issues on the agenda.

In addition to these countries, the European Union also participates in G-7 summits.

The most important item on the agenda of the G-7 summit will undoubtedly be Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This summit is expected to be a summit where the G-7 countries will discuss the impact of the many economic sanctions against Russia and determine the roadmap for possible new economic and political sanctions.

On the other hand, it is a fact that EU countries have difficulties in ensuring their security of supply, especially in natural gas, due to their high energy dependence on Russia. Therefore, European countries seem to have difficulties in acting together on energy.

Although EU countries have taken steps to both end their oil purchases from Russia and reduce their natural gas purchases to at least minimum levels, it will not be easy to implement these steps.

Germany, which is the EU’s major power, imports about half of its natural gas from Russia, and it is not easy for Germany to find an alternative to Russia in a short period of time.

The fact that many European countries importing natural gas from Russia are obliged to pay in Russian rubles is an important problem in terms of European countries not acting together against Russia, and the fact that Russia still receives a significant amount of energy income from European countries in the ongoing war environment is also a serious dilemma.

Therefore, the possible energy questions to be answered at this summit are as follows;

Who will be the new source or source countries in case Russia cuts off natural gas in order to threaten European countries?

Will European countries comply with the obligation to pay for natural gas imports in Russian rubles?

Could European countries take a break from the fight against climate change and return to fossil fuels such as coal?

The answers to all these questions, and therefore the energy issue for European countries, are expected to be the major topic of the summit.

Another important issue that will be on the agenda at the G-7 summit is the food crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The food crisis is a candidate to become a problem for many countries. The seriousness of the food crisis is constantly voiced by many organizations, especially the UN.

The UN Secretary-General has repeatedly stated that the world is facing a global hunger crisis and that Russia must reintegrate the food and fertilizer it produces into world markets, despite the war, in order to solve the food crisis that threatens the world.

This is why the food crisis has always been perceived as a problem of poor countries, but now it is a global food crisis. In other words, since food is no longer only a problem of the poor countries, but also of the rich countries, it is expected to be one of the important agenda items of this G-7 summit. It is expected to be an important summit where concrete aid will be discussed to rebuild Ukraine after the war and to increase support to Ukraine.
