A court in Russia sentenced a former employee of the US Embassy to 14 years in prison on drug trafficking charges.
According to the Interfax news agency, Marc Fogel was detained in August 2021 at Sheremetyevo International Airport in the capital Moscow on drug possession charges.
The news agency also reported that Fogel, a former embassy employee, was working at an Anglo-American school in the city at the time of his detention.
Interfax reported that Fogel pleaded guilty to charges of drug trafficking, storage, transportation, production and processing.
The US State Department declined to comment on Fogel.
CBS News reported in January that Fogel told visiting lawyers that he used marijuana for medical reasons after spinal surgery.
He had 17 grams of the drug on him when he was taken into custody.
The jail sentence comes amid growing tensions between Russia and the United States over the war in Ukraine and other issues.
