European Commission to support Egypt with €100 million for food security

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union (EU) has allocated 100 million euros in emergency aid to help Egypt upgrade its grain capacity to tackle the global food crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

Von der Leyen spoke today at a joint press conference following her meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

The President of the European Commission said that she held talks with President Sisi to increase cooperation between the two sides, to strengthen ties on many issues and to face the crises that the world is currently witnessing.

He said that during the meeting, they discussed various issues, especially food security, which has been on the agenda all over the world in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

Von der Leyen also announced that the EU will provide 3 billion euros to the region to face the repercussions of the crisis.

For his part, Sisi said that Von der Leyen’s visit to Cairo took place within the framework of the recent strengthening of Egypt’s relations with the EU.

He added that the talks with the President of the European Commission included an exchange of views on the current economic crisis, especially with regard to food security and high energy prices.

“Egypt is moving steadily on the path of development,” President Sisi said, pointing to the continued joint coordination with the EU in the fight against terrorism and illegal migration.

He expressed Egypt’s willingness to reach a binding legal agreement on the Nahda Dam (Renaissance).

Sisi demanded that the language of dialogue prevail to resolve the crisis in Russia and Ukraine, adding that the current conditions the world is witnessing require more cooperation.
