Nick Clegg, Director of Global Affairs and former UK Deputy Prime Minister at Meta, the company that owns Facebook, said Mark Zuckerberg will remain as Meta CEO for many years.

The changes in Facebook’s management made headlines after Meta’s second-most powerful Sheryl Sandberg announced her resignation after working with Zuckerberg for 14 years.

While the heads of other giant tech companies such as Amazon, Twitter and Google are stepping down from their posts, despite huge controversy over Facebook’s exploitation of its users’ private data, Zuckerberg has shown no signs of resigning.

Nick Clegg told AFP there was no reason for Zuckerberg, 38, to leave the company.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Americas Summit in Los Angeles, Clegg said: “It makes sense that Mark would want to continue his role at META to build the company’s new division, which would take many years. He is the founder of the company but also the architect of the new division and augmented and virtual reality technologies.”

Facebook acquired virtual reality headset maker Oculus in 2014 and created a social VR platform. The technique has attracted interest in the gaming industry, especially among Fortnite and Roblox users.

Clegg Clegg said the Metaverse holds great promise in the education and medical sectors as well as entertainment.

Meta’s platforms are used by about 3.6 billion people a month, and the company’s estimated value is currently more than $500 billion.
