U.S. President Joe Biden welcomed Finland and Sweden’s application for NATO membership and expressed strong support for the process.
In a written statement, Biden said: “We strongly support and welcome Finland and Sweden’s application for NATO membership. I look forward to working with the U.S. Congress and our NATO allies to quickly incorporate Finland and Sweden into the strongest defense alliance in history.”
Stating that the application of the two countries was an important decision, Biden underlined that their commitment to NATO’s Article 5 was unshakable.
Pointing out that the participation of these two countries will further strengthen NATO, Biden said, “When evaluating NATO memberships, the United States; It will continue to work with Finland and Sweden to stand strong against threats to our common security and to repel attacks.”
Reminding that he will meet with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson in Washington tomorrow, Biden said that the two countries will exchange views on the NATO application and the security of Europe.
