Doubts remain over Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu

A month into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Putin still hasn’t got what he wants. While the failure of the advance in Ukraine leaves many questions behind, allegations about Russian commanders and intelligence officers are also flying.

There has long been talk that Russia’s military plans have infiltrated U.S. and U.K. intelligence, setbacks by Russian troops on the ground and major frontline casualties, and that Russia’s Putin has sacked some of the most outraged generals.

LOST FOR 12 DAYS

One of the most talked about names in the whole process is Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu. Shoigu, who was in charge of military operations on the ground during the Ukrainian invasion, had not been seen for about 12 days.

The sudden disappearance of Shoigu, who often appears on screens, has sparked speculation, with many suggesting shoigu was dismissed by Putin because of the failure in Ukraine. Others claimed Shoigu was ill.

DAUGHTER POSES IN UKRAINIAN COLORS

Putin was known to have detained Shoigu for some time due to leaked military plans and rumors of a coup. At this point, as the allegations against her were made, Shoigu’s 31-year-old daughter Ksenia posed in the blue and yellow colors of Ukraine in a photo posted online.

Both the world’s media and Russian media reported that the minister’s daughter’s move was a salt in the ass in the tension between Putin and Shoigu.

REVEALED BUT IMAGES RAISE SUSPICION

After all this speculation, Shoigu attended the Security Council Meeting organized by Putin. All previous meetings were broadcast by Russian media from the start, while only part of yesterday’s meeting was broadcast.

In the video, all other officials clearly appeared on the screen, while Shoigu’s images raised suspicions. In the video, the screen briefly dims before the Russian minister appears, and the image shakes for a few seconds.

OLD VIDEO USED?

The video shared by the Kremlin did not contain audio, and Shoigu’s suspicious images led to allegations that old footage was used in the video.

The Kremlin was today accused by Western media of using old images of Shoigu, who disappeared after a witch hunt over leakers of Putin’s military plans, to deceive the public.

PESKOV: LESS TIME FOR THE MEDIA CAN BE UNDERSTOOD

Kremlin spokesman Dmitriy Peskov said earlier that when asked about Shoigu’s whereabouts, it was understandable that the defence minister had less time for the media.

Peskov told Russian media after the Security Council Meeting that Shoigu had submitted a report to Putin on the operations. “Defense Minister Soygu reported on the progress of the special military operation, as well as the provision of humanitarian aid, restoring vital infrastructure in liberated areas and ensuring security,” Peskov said.
