The Government of Slovakia decided to declare a state of emergency at a Meeting of the Council of Ministers today, stating that more than 10,000 Ukrainians enter Slovakia daily in a report submitted by the Interior Ministry. “The government declares and cancels an emergency if the scope of the endangered or affected area exceeds the terrestrial area of the area for the danger zone or the area where the emergency occurred. During the emergency, it will be possible to prepare conditions for the prevention and mitigation of the consequences of the emergency in connection with the mass influx of foreigners into the territory of the Republic of Slovakia.”
“Ukrainians will be granted temporary asylum status”
“In fact, nothing changes, as Slovakia we have been in a state of emergency for 2 years due to Covid-19. Only now will it become linked to the situation in Ukraine. Nothing will change in life outside. This decision is necessary to grant temporary asylum status to Ukrainians who come to our country. Ukrainians will now be able to be in the European Union for up to 90 days. This status will allow them to stay safe for longer. I am also proud of my people for the help that has been raised to the ukrainian people who are in difficulty.”
“We are part of NATO and we are safe”
Heger went on to say that Slovakia has made all preparations for the current situation and that the country has been investing in defence for years. “Our people should not worry. We have all kinds of preparations. We are also part of NATO and we are safe. Together we are organized and strong.”
Border crossings take between 8 and 10 hours
The entrances lasted between 8 and 10 hours due to the density at the Vysne Nemecke border crossing, where Ukrainians entered Slovakia, while about 1,500 entries per day took place before Russia’s attacks began. More than 10,000 Ukrainians have entered Slovakia in the past 24 hours, mostly women and children, and men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave Ukraine.
Nadezda Sirkova, mayor of the border town of Ubl, said in a statement, “We welcomed the first Ukrainians to the ceremonial hall of the town hall. We provide hot food to those who come within our means. Our preparations are complete in the gym.”
The state of emergency was implemented at 12 noon today, but it was not disclosed until when it would remain in force.
