Finnish scientists have found that tomatoes, a vegetable that everyone knows well, can reduce the risk of stroke by 59 per cent, the British Daily Express reported.

Research by scientists from the University of Eastern Finland reportedly found that tomatoes are useful in preventing paralysis. The study of 1,31 men aged 46 to 65 tested lycopene levels, a powerful antioxidant that helps all participants maintain blood pressure and lower bad cholesterol levels, the main risk factor for stroke.

Participants in the study were observed for an average of 12 years. A total of 67 people suffered a stroke during this period. At the same time, the researchers noted that of the 258 men with the lowest levels of lycopene, 25 had a stroke, while only 11 of the 259 men with the highest levels had had a stroke.

Scientists concluded that people with high lycopene levels were 59 percent less likely to have a stroke than those with low levels. One of the main sources of lycopene on the table is tomatoes, the study noted.

“This prospective study shows that high concentrations of lycopene in serum, which indicates the consumption of tomato and tomato-based products, reduce the risk of all kinds of strokes and ischemic paralysis in men,” the scientists wrote in their note on the study.
