Answering questions from reporters about the Ukraine crisis, US President Biden said he could impose sanctions on Russian President Putin if he invaded Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden answers questions from reporters during a visit to a small business in Washington, D.C. Asked by a reporter if putin would sanction him if he invaded Ukraine, Biden replied, “Yes.”
“NO NATO COUNTRY NEEDS TO BE AFRAID”
Euronews quoted Biden as saying that 8,500 U.S. troops are on alert for the protection of countries on NATO’s Eastern flank, and that some of them could soon move to Europe.
A possible Invasion of Ukraine would have economic consequences for Russia, Biden said, adding that “we have no plans to deploy American troops or NATO troops to Ukraine.”
“THIS CHANGES THE WHOLE WORLD”
Biden stressed that he had also warned Putin that the cost of the invasion would be “too high.” I said it would be the biggest invasion since World War II. This changes the whole world.”
WHAT DO THE PARTIES TO THE CRISIS WANT?
The Western bloc, led by the United States, and Russia are at odds over Ukraine. The West is threatening sanctions, accusing Russia of plotting an ‘invasion’ that has deployed 100,000 troops on its border with Ukraine. Russia, which denies the ‘invasion’ claim, says Ukraine is trying to join NATO and that it is a national security threat to itself.
Moscow is seeking security guarantees from the United States and NATO to overcome the crisis. Moscow’s guarantee that Ukraine would not be admitted to NATO was not accepted. Direct talks between the two sides failed.
NATO will respond to Russia’s written security guarantees later this week.
