Hamidreza Taamoli reported that a statue in the main square of the town belonging to Khomeini, the founder and former spiritual leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was attacked:

“The person in question was identified as soon as possible and sent to prison.”

Taamoli added that the motive for the attacker’s destruction of the statue is not yet known.

A similar incident occurred in the country earlier this month.

A statue of Qassim Suleimani was set on fire at night on January 5th in The City of Chaharmahal and Bahtiyari province. Authorities said a “counter-agent” believed to have burned the statue had been arrested.

The statue, worth 150 million divisions (about $500,000), was unveiled just hours before the attack.

Suleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Army’s Jerusalem Force, was assassinated by U.S. drones on January 3, 2020. Tensions between Iran and the United States escalated in the wake of the assassination.
