Total sales in the European Union (EU) automobile market fell to the lowest level measured since 1993 due to chip shortages in November.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has announced the new car registration data of EU countries for November. Accordingly, the chip shortage negatively affected vehicle sales in European countries.

Automobile sales among EU countries decreased by 31.7 percent in Germany, 24.6 percent in Italy, 12.3 percent in Spain and 3.2 percent in France in November compared to the same period of the previous year.

Among the 27 EU member states, Germany had the highest number of new cars in November. During this period, 198 thousand 258 new cars were registered in Germany, 121 thousand 994 in France, 104 thousand 478 in Italy and 66 thousand 399 in Spain.

New car registrations in the EU decreased by 0.04 percent in January-November 2021 compared to the same period last year, to 8 million 904 thousand 900.

According to the manufacturers, VW Group sold the most new cars in the EU in November with 152,848.

Stellantis Group followed VW Group in new vehicles in EU. Stellantis Group, which includes brands such as Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen and Opel, sold a total of 151,973 cars. Renault Group, on the other hand, took the third place with 86 thousand 434 new cars.
