Touch screens used in automobiles are getting dirty to the extent that they disturb drivers in terms of both health and image. Announcing that they are working on this issue, General Motors announced that they have received a patent for self-cleaning screen technology.

General Motors will produce a self-cleaning screen

The company stated that the fingerprint problem occurring on touch screens will be completely eliminated thanks to the technology they have developed. It was announced that the technology consisting of four different pixels does not have any negative effects on users’ eye health.

The technology developed by making some basic changes in the pixels on the screen has an ultraviolet pixel that is invisible to the eye. The developed photocatalytic system works in harmony with the red, green and blue LEDs in standard RGB matrices.

In the developed technology, there is a metal oxide-based photocatalyst on the screen surface. Analysts estimate that this technology was inspired by self-cleaning solar panels. It is worth noting that self-cleaning solar panels use a transparent titanium dioxide layer.

When exposed to UV light, photocatalysts switch from hydrophobic to super hydrophilic, attracting moisture from the air. The technology, which forms a thin layer of water on the surface, is oxidised to kill harmful organisms. Thanks to photocatalysts, oil residues smeared from our fingers can also be cleaned.

It was stated that the developed technology can be applied in touch screen laptops and similar devices more than cars. It is estimated that laptop manufacturers will come up with a similar technology.
